The Madrid that existed before everything else

Forget what you think you know about Madrid. Long before the Habsburgs, before the Royal Palace, before Plaza Mayor, this was a Muslim city. Founded in the 9th century by Emir Muhammad I as a frontier fortress to defend Toledo, its original name was Mayrit: "place of many waters."

On this sunset free walking tour we trace the medieval bones of Madrid: the Arab wall, the original mosque, the Christian conquest of 1085, the medieval streets that still survive, and we finish with the most spectacular view in the city, sunset over the Templo de Debod, a genuine 2,200-year-old Egyptian temple gifted to Spain.

This is the Madrid that came before everything else. The Madrid that almost no tourist sees.

02 · The route

Stop by stop

While most Madrid tours start in the 16th century with the Habsburg court, we go back 700 years earlier. We walk you through the Madrid that was already here when the rest of Europe still saw Spain as a Muslim kingdom. Real history, hidden in plain sight, that almost nobody tells.

And we end the tour at the perfect moment: sunset over the Templo de Debod, with the Royal Palace and the Almudena Cathedral glowing in the background. One of the most photographed spots in Madrid, and the finest way to close a tour.

  1. 01

    Plaza Mayor

Our starting point, in the heart of Old Madrid. Before the imperial square existed, this was a medieval marketplace just outside the Arab wall.

  2. 02

    Plaza de la Villa

The political heart of medieval Madrid. Three buildings, three centuries, the same square where the city council has met for over 600 years.

  3. 03

    Calle del Codo

The narrowest street in medieval Madrid, named after the secret love story of a young couple.

  4. 04

San Nicolás de los Servitas Tower

The oldest church tower in Madrid (12th century). Built in Mudéjar style, a perfect example of Muslim architecture serving Christian purposes after the conquest.

  5. 05

    Plaza de la Cruz Verde

The square where the Inquisition burned heretics. A quiet corner today; back then, the public stage of religious terror.

  6. 06

    Arab Wall (Muralla Árabe)

The original 9th-century defensive wall built by Emir Muhammad I. The most important medieval ruin in Madrid, hidden behind the Almudena Cathedral.

  7. 07

    Cuesta de la Vega

The medieval slope where the Christian troops of Alfonso VI entered Madrid in 1085. The exact spot where Madrid changed religion forever.

  8. 08

    Almudena Cathedral and Royal Palace

Imperial Madrid built directly over the medieval city. We connect both eras and explain why this is the most layered spot in Madrid.

  9. 09

    Plaza de Oriente

The perfect corner for photos: the Royal Palace on one side, the Royal Theatre on the other.

  10. 10

    Templo de Debod at sunset

The grand finale. A genuine 2,200-year-old Egyptian temple, gifted by Egypt to Spain in 1968 and rebuilt stone by stone in Parque del Oeste. The most spectacular sunset view in all of Madrid.

Who is it for?

Who is this tour for?

For travellers who have already done the classic Madrid tours and want to discover the layer beneath. For history lovers, photographers and anyone curious about the Muslim past of Spain. For couples, solo travellers and small groups looking for a magical experience at sunset rather than just a daytime walk.

If you only have one evening in Madrid, this is the tour we recommend. The combination of medieval history, sunset over the Royal Palace and an Egyptian temple is unmatched anywhere in Europe.
