A market with medieval roots
The story of the Mercado de San Miguel reaches back to the thirteenth century, when this corner of the city was an open-air market in the square then known as the Plaza de San Miguel. The spot was well chosen. It sat beside the church of San Miguel de los Octoes, one of the oldest in Madrid, which stood here until it vanished in the nineteenth century. For generations, traders gathered on the square to sell food, tools and everyday goods. In time, though, the old outdoor stalls no longer met the needs of a growing city, and the idea of a covered market began to take shape.
Building the market we know today
Work on the market we know today began in 1913, led by the architect Alfonso Dubé y Díez. Looking to the great covered iron markets already standing in cities such as Paris and Barcelona, he designed a building around a striking framework of wrought iron. The aim was a clean, modern and hygienic space fit for the fast-growing population of early twentieth-century Madrid. In 1916 the market opened its doors, and it quickly became one of the most important in the city.
