12 October 2026 in Madrid at a Glance
Spain's National Day falls on a Monday this year, which gives Madrid a long weekend from Saturday 10 to Monday 12 October. It is one of the liveliest weekends of the autumn: the most important official event of the year meets the closing days of Hispanidad 2026, the festival that has been filling the city's squares with music since 2 October.
- Military parade: Monday 12 at 11:00, from Glorieta de Carlos V to Plaza de Colón.
- Road closures along the route: roughly from 07:00 to 15:00.
- Hispanidad 2026: concerts at Plaza de España, Plaza Mayor and Madrid Río until Monday 12.
- Official advice: use public transport and avoid driving in the centre.
The 12 October Parade: Time, Route and Ceremony
The military parade starts at 11:00 on Monday 12 October. It sets off from Glorieta del Emperador Carlos V, next to Atocha, and runs along Paseo del Prado, Plaza de Cibeles and Paseo de Recoletos to Plaza de Colón. The programme includes the review of the troops, the tribute to the flag and to the fallen, the flypast and the ground parade, and it ends with the lowering of the flag at 13:30.
The nearest metro stations are Atocha, Estación del Arte, Banco de España, Retiro, Serrano and Colón. If you want a spot by the barriers, arrive early: Paseo del Prado and Recoletos fill up fast. The flypast can be seen from most of the route, so you do not need a front-row place to enjoy it. Cibeles and Neptune, two key points of the route, are also stops on the Madrid Monumental free tour, which tells the story of Bourbon Madrid from Gran Vía to the Retiro.

Hispanidad 2026, the sixth edition of the festival, runs from 2 to 12 October with more than 150 activities and the United States as guest country. Most events are free to attend, but check the official programme before you go. The main stages of the final weekend are at Plaza de España, Plaza Mayor and the Madrid Río esplanade.
- Plaza de España, Sunday 11: Marta Sánchez (13:00), Tipa Tipo (19:00) and Los Cumbia Stars (21:00).
- Plaza de España, Monday 12: Carlos Baute closes the stage at 20:00, after Galdri Pereira and the cast of the musical SIX.
- Plaza Mayor, Sunday 11: Tori Sparks and the Madrid Regional Orchestra and Choir (ORCAM).
- Madrid Río, Sunday 11: Comandante Twin, Jenny and The Mexicats, Aymée Nuviola and Cimafunk.
- Madrid Río, Monday 12: dancers from the Mariemma, Carmen Amaya and Fortea professional dance conservatories.
A Plan for Monday 12 in Madrid

On 12 October 1492, Christopher Columbus's expedition reached the Americas. The date marks that meeting of two worlds and the shared heritage that links Spanish-speaking countries. Since 1987 it has been, by law, Spain's National Day, and much of Latin America commemorates it under different names.
It is also the feast of Our Lady of the Pillar, patron saint of the Hispanic world and of the Guardia Civil, which is why many Spaniards call it the Pilar long weekend. In the United States, the date falls at the end of Hispanic Heritage Month, which runs from 15 September to 15 October.

The centre will be busy with locals and visitors, so plan ahead. If you have three days, keep one for a trip out of town: Toledo and Segovia are an hour away and there are guided coach day trips from the city centre.
- Take the metro or the Cercanías trains: on Monday morning streets are closed between Atocha and Colón.
- Bring water and a light jacket: October mornings are cool and you will be standing for a while.
- Book restaurants and visits in advance: on long weekends everything fills up sooner.
- For the concerts, arrive early: access to the squares is controlled by capacity.
