From late November to early January, Madrid transforms. The historic centre fills with light installations, the plazas host markets, and locals and visitors alike wrap up warm to stroll the decorated streets. It is a season built for walking, tasting and taking your time. If you want to feel the real spirit of the city, December is one of the best months to visit.

Madrid's Christmas Markets

Christmas markets are at the heart of the celebration. Most open in late November, but they do not all close on the same day: the Plaza Mayor market shuts on 31 December, while La Navideña in Plaza de España and the El Gato market at Gran Via 13 stay open into January. Each has its own character, so it is worth visiting more than one for handmade gifts, decorations and seasonal treats. • Plaza Mayor: The most traditional market in the city, with stalls selling handicrafts, nativity figures, decorations and classic sweets right in the grand main square, from late November to 31 December.
• Plaza de España: La Navideña combines an ice rink, around 40 craft stalls and a food area, ideal for a relaxed browse near the Royal Palace (in 2025 it ran from 25 November to 11 January).
• Feria Mercado de Artesanía on Paseo de Recoletos: More than 130 craft workshops between Colón and Cibeles (1 to 30 December in 2025), with unique, handmade gifts you will not find in the shops.

The Christmas Lights: Madrid's Festive Show

The city's Christmas illuminations are a spectacle in their own right. The lights are switched on in late November and stay up until early January, turning streets like Gran Via, Puerta del Sol and Plaza Mayor into open-air light shows. In 2025 they were switched on at Cibeles on 22 November and stayed on until 6 January, from 6 pm to midnight (1 am on Fridays and Saturdays); the 2026 date has not been announced yet. For the best experience, walk the centre after dark and let the crowds and the glow set the mood. • Naviluz bus: The city's Christmas bus, run by EMT, tours the lights in about 50 minutes. In 2025 it ran from 23 November to 6 January (except 24 and 31 December and 5 January) from Calle Felipe IV, next to the Prado, a fun option for families who want to see the lights without the walking. Tickets are sold online and go fast at weekends.

Events and Activities in December

• Christmas concerts: From classical performances at the Teatro Real to contemporary shows at venues like La Riviera.
• Ice skating rinks: Spots such as Matadero Madrid and the Palacio de Cibeles turn into festive skating venues.
• Nativity scenes (belenes): Elaborate nativity displays appear in churches, museums and public buildings throughout the city. You cannot experience Christmas in Madrid without tasting the season's food. Spanish holiday sweets are everywhere, and restaurants roll out special menus for Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve. Come hungry.

• Traditional sweets: Turron (nougat), mazapan (marzipan), polvorones (crumbly almond cookies) and the famous roscon de Reyes at the start of January.
• Festive dinners: Many restaurants offer special set menus for Nochebuena (Christmas Eve) and Nochevieja (New Year's Eve), so book ahead.
• Chocolate con churros: A Madrid classic, and nowhere better than San Gines to warm up on a cold winter morning.

Culture and Things to Do on Christmas Day

Christmas in Madrid is also a season of culture. The city's world-class museums keep special holiday hours, and theatres put on festive shows. On 25 December itself, many places close, but the city is far from empty, and a quiet stroll can be the highlight of the day.
